Review
OBLITERATOR
by Mark Underwood
You are Drak, The last of the Obliterators. Your mission is to
beam onto an enemy ship and destroy it. When you load the program there
is a very nicely animated screen of the Obliterator (you), aiming your
blaster out of the screen. Eyebrows wiggle and teeth grimace as he lets
loose with his gun. Sorry girls, it's another macho, male orientated
game. The screen then fades to a still picture of the cover art. Again,
very nice.
You beam onto the alien ship, in a Star Trek manner, and then you
are on your own. You control your man by pointing the mouse in the
direction you want to go and then clicking the button. You can also
control movements and other actions by means of an icon control panel.
As you move around there are many enemy robots of different
varieties that will destroy you if you don't destroy them first. To help
you, you have a blaster, but you may pick up heavier armament from around
the ship. You will also need to find ammunition for these weapons.
While all this is going on a very atmospheric piece of music
plays, but this can be turned off if you wish, leaving you with pretty
much standard sound effects.
This game is graphically similar to the Psygnosis's previous
release, Barbarian. By that I mean that you control a figure and move
him through a maze of platforms to perform certain tasks. And, like
Barbarian, the main fault of the game is the sprite animation, as well as
the annoying delays as the screen flips. While these are problems that
should be addressed in future releases, they do not detract too much from
a very good game.
This game has much more depth than Barbarian as the maze is much
larger, there is an added three dimensional depth, and there are a number
of different objectives to carry out before you can complete the mission.
Because of this I feel that it has more than enough to keep you
interested until you get your money's worth. I enjoyed the game very much
and give it about 8 out of 10.
